Carbon needs heat and pressure to crystallize into diamond and those conditions would have been present about 150km below the Earth's surface over 3 billion years ago where diamonds were formed deep within the earth’s mantle. Diamond crystals grow gradually over millions of years as more and more carbon atoms join together.
